The Dead End of Cynicism

Cynicism began to take hold of me during college. I don't blame the school or my friends - it was a long time coming - but the bad and ugly became nearly all I could see. Many people called me a "pessimist", which seemed true, but upon reflection I think it's more accurate to call me a "wildly idealistic dreamer who didn't know how to deal with disappointment."

In 2003, I joined up with a community of dreamers who helped me see the beauty in the mess and encouraged me out of my self-protected pit. It was - and is - slow going, but this is a bit of the story. . .

There are four main books that have helped me in the journey out of cynicism...

(1) "Orthodoxy" by G.K.Chesterton - as mentioned in the intro and read from in the "Enchanted" song.

(2) "Forgotten Among the Lilies" and "The Holy Longing" by Ronald Rolheiser - I've never read an author that understands the ache of life in a more beautiful way than this author. He begins a book with this line: "We are fired into life by a madness that comes from our incompleteness." And then he helps us return to a deep, child-like hope.

(3) "Everything Belongs" by Richard Rohr - I would recommend every book by Fr Rohr to anyone who would like to move beyond religion and become a mystic.
